As I sit here and type this egg custard pie recipe it is ironically National Pi Day. In celebration of all things 3:14, chances are if you landed on this recipe, you love the silky, smooth taste of a good homemade custard. For me, my love of custard pie developed when I was a kid. My mom would always buy a custard pie for Sunday breakfast. I love the smooth and slightly crunchy crust and the velvety custard. It was a sad day when the bake shop stopped making custard pies, but the good news is my family had a custard pie recipe because a good custard is a New England Tradition.
This egg custard pie recipe is super basic in that there are no extra “fluff” ingredients. Everything is pretty basic and made from simple ingredients like milk, eggs, and lard. If you do not want to make your own crust, you can follow this recipe which is pretty much like ours sans the crust.
Speaking of eggs, I have found over the years that not all eggs are created equally. Some are super bland, and have the tiniest yolks, some have a weird smell, and others are so tasty you could eat them all day, every day. Aside from farm-fresh eggs which are not always available here, My go-to brand happens to be Eggland’s Best Eggs. I love that they truly are the better egg and are the No. 1 branded egg in the U.S.
