Red, White, and Blue Fire Cracker Patriotic Sugar Cookies

Homemade sugar cookies are swizzled with homemade royal icing. These patriotic cookies are perfect for cookouts, parties, and summer fun!

Equipment

  • stand mixer

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cup All purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Royal Icing

  • 2 cups confectioners Sugar
  • egg white only* 1 large egg white
  • 1/2 teaspoon water

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Cream the sugar, eggs, butter, and extract; mix well.
  • In a large bowl, combine the dry cookie ingredients, and whisk well.
  • Slowly add in the dry ingredients into the stand mixer and beat until the dough is thick.
  • Place dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours. The longer, the better.
  • Once dough is ready, pluck out small 1 inch balls and place 12 on each cookie sheet
  • Bake for 8-9 minutes or until cooled.

For the Royal Icing-

  • In a large bowl, combine sugar, egg white, and water
  • Mix until smooth with a whisk, or wooden spoon.
  • Divide icing into three bowls, and add red and blue gel to 2/3 bowls-leave one white.
  • Once cookies have cooled, drizzle them with each color using a fork
  • Cookies will need 24 hours to fully harden.

Notes

Patriotic Icing Hack
In you do not want to wait 24 hours for royal icing to harden, you can use vanilla frosting.
Divide a can of store-bought vanilla frosting into 3 bowls. Color the red and white bowls with 3-4 drops of food gel and stir.
Microwave for 15 seconds or until creamy.
Stir well and swizzle on cookies. Cookies will need about 1 hour to harden.
