In this post, we’ll show you how to make the very best French Toast Made with Almond Milk. This classic recipe is hearty enough to be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, and even dinner.
Texas Toast style bread is dipped in an almond milk based vanilla-cinnamon custard batter, and carefully griddled until golden brown. Topped with a dusting of powdered sugar, and syrup; this classic is made extra delicious.
Ingredients
Before starting this recipe, you’ll want to verify that you have the following ingredients:
- Texas Toast style bread – this is a thick and fluffy bread that really soaks up the custard batter and makes for a nice, thick slice of French Toast.
- Eggs – These help to make the custard batter that coats the bread slices.
- Almond milk– We used unsweetened almond milk for the batter. This combines with the egg to make the custard mixture.
- Cinnamon – This ingredient adds natural flavor to the custard batter.
- Vanilla extract – Adding just a teaspoon will give your batter a wonderful vanilla flavor.
- Powdered sugar – We used this to sweeten the cooked toast. Since we do not sweeten the batter it is nice to have a subtle sweetness to complement the flavor.
- Maple syrup – Syrup completes the final dish, but it optional.

Recipe Tips
This recipe is easy to make if you know the right tips and tricks! Here are my tips for ensuring your Almond Milk French Toast comes out perfectly.
Griddle
A preheated griddle that is perfectly greased with coconut oil, butter, ghee, or lard is crucial. Heat the griddle to 350 degrees F. Once it is heated, grease it with one tablespoon of oil.
Note: It is important to not preheat your griddle until your batter is prepared. You do not want the oil to start to burn, and brown.
Oil
The oil used to grease your griddle before grilling your French Toast comes down to a matter of preference, and diet. If you are looking to make this a dairy-free meal, coconut oil is a great choice. Using a refined coconut oil will prevent your toast from a coconutty flavor. Personally, I find unsalted butter to be a favorite for making French Toast. Ghee, lard, margarine, or vegetable shortening can also be used.
Bread
Texas Toast makes an amazing bread for this meal, however you can use other breads with equally desirable results. Sliced Portuguese sweetbread, raisin bread, sliced Italian bread, cinnamon bread, or plain old sliced American bread are great options. This recipe is ideal for stale bread too as long as it doesn’t have any mold. Be sure to inspect all edges for signs of mold before using.
Storage
If you want to store your French Toast, just follow these easy steps.
Refrigerator
This can be prepared, cooked and cooled to be refrigerated for up to 24 hours. Simply place any extra toast in an airtight container and reheat in the microwave to warm and serve with syrup or powdered sugar.
Freezing
Additionally this gluten and dairy free French toast recipe can be frozen. To freeze, cook the French toast and allow it to fully cool. Place cooked slices on a baking sheet and freeze for 2 hours. Once slices are frozen, move them to a zippered freezer bag and store them in the freezer for up to 30 days time.
To heat, simply microwave and serve with syrup or powdered sugar.
