Homemade sugar cookies are swizzled with homemade royal icing. These patriotic cookies are perfect for cookouts, parties, and summer fun!
Welcome to May everyone. Hard to believe we already are in the month that signifies the unofficial start to summer. As I sit here and type this my house is a chilly 63 degrees and my hands feel frozen.
Thankfully, the weatherman promised warmer days ahead for next week, but I will believe it when I see it! For now, I will continue to bake to warm up my home because I sure the heck am not turning the heat back on…I mean really, we are in May!
Today, I decided to ring in May with some patriotic fire cracker sugar cookies. I used my basic sugar cookie recipe, and royal icing to make these colorful and very red, white, and blue cookies. I may or may not have decided to photograph them before they were fully hardened, but I just could not resist! Plus, my two year old was totally eyeing them, and even ruined a batch for my other site!
I love how these look and they were actually super easy to make! Some quality food gels, perfect consistency royal icing, and forks were my best friends for these sweet treats! I love how the colors of these patriotic sugar cookies look like fireworks or fire crackers–that is where I got the name from!

- 1 + 1/2 cups white sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 cup of unsalted butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Royal Icing Ingredients

- 1 large egg white only
- water 1/2 tsp
Make Sugar Cookies
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
In a stand mixer, cream the sugar, eggs, butter, and extract; mix well.
In a large bowl, combine the dry cookie ingredients, and whisk well.
Slowly add in the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and beat until the dough is thick.
Place dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. You can do more, the colder, the better to prevent spreading.
Once dough is ready, pluck out small 1 inch balls and place 12 on each cookie sheet spaced evenly apart.
Bake for 8-9 minutes.
Allow cookies to fully cool before icing.
For the Royal Icing-
In a large bowl, combine sugar, egg white, and water.
Mix until smooth with a whisk, or wooden spoon.
Divide icing into three bowls, and add red and blue gel to 2/3 bowls-leave one white.
Once cookies have cooled, drizzle them with each color using a fork
Cookies will need 24 hours to fully harden.
