Sweet and Tangy Caramelized Onion Dip
Chips and delicious dips are some of my all time favorite things to snack on. I am such a fan of french onion dip, but I am certainly not a fan of the bloating and stomach aches the canned, or jarred stuff gives me. Honestly, dips that do not need to be refrigerated really creep me out. That’s when years ago, I decided I wanted to make my own french onion dip.
While the french onion dip was really delicious, I was still seeking something with a little sweetness, and tang to it. That is when my husband found a delicious recipe online by non other than Alton Brown. After making his Onion Dip from scratch, we knew we found the almost perfect onion dip recipe that wasn’t very hard to make. Of course, we adapted it to our liking, but it is still, to this day a party-must, and crowd pleaser.
The key to making this already delicious Sweet and Tangy Caramelized Onion Dip ever better is to make it ahead of time. I found that 24 hours in the refrigerator gives this dip’s flavors a chance to meld. Also, the use of sweet, white onions is a must. The yellow variety are ok, but the sweeter variety is what brings out the sweetness, and tang against the mayo and sour cream.
Ingredients:
- Sweet Onions- 2 cups finely diced
- Butter- 3 tablespoons
- Mayonnaise- 3/4 cup
- Sour Cream- 1 1/2 cups
- Salt- 1/2 tsp
- White pepper- 1 tsp
Directions:
In a large frying pan, add butter, onions, and spices.
Over low heat allow onions to caramelize for around 30 minutes. Onions will be a golden brown honey color throughout.
Add onions, mayo and sour cream to a bowl, and mix. Place in the fridge for 24 hours to really marinate the flavors.
I have to also admit that in order to get the onions to caramelize, you will need to cook them for quite some time. Mine took about 30 minutes on low heat to turn that coveted gold brown. You certainly so not want to rush them, or under-cook them because the onions will taste raw, and that would be just icky!
