Equipment

Ingredients

  • 40 ounces canned apple pie filling (2 cans)
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon *optional
  • 15.25 ounces Spice Cake Mix
  • 12 tablespoons unsalted butter sliced into thin pads

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray an 9 x 13 baking dish with nonstick spray.
  • Dump both cans of apples into the greased pan and spread them. Sprinkle cinnamon evenly over apples.
  • Sprinkle on cake mix over apples, and gently pat into the apple mixture to absorb the juices.
  • Add sliced butter pats to the top of the cake evenly.
  • Bake for 45-50 minutes. The top of the cake will be firm, bubbly, and golden brown. Serve warm and enjoy!

Expert Tips

For the best results, freeze your butter for 1 hour, then use a cheese grater to grate it over the cake mix. This ensures an even bake with no dry, powdery spots!
If you have a smaller 13.25 oz box: Your dump cake will still be delicious, but the top crust will be slightly thinner. Because there is less dry powder to absorb the liquid, you should reduce the butter slightly to prevent the topping from becoming greasy. Use 1 stick (8 tablespoons) of frozen butter instead of 1 ½ sticks
