When it comes to cooking steak, the grill is probably the most coveted tool in a cook’s toolbox. Nothing beats a grill’s ability to perfectly sear meat on the outside while maintaining a juicy and tender center. This post is sponsored by McCormick Grill Mates. All views expressed are ours.
In this recipe we’re going to show you how to grill the perfect sirloin steak tips on a propane gas grill. Plus, we’ll share our favorite beef seasoning which happens to be McCormick Grill Mates Montreal Steak Seasoning which makes sirloin tips even more mouthwatering!
Choosing the right cut of meat
The best sirloin tips are only as good as the beef they started off as – meaning, it’s important that you choose the best cut of meat at the market.
Steak tips are made from the sirloin, which is cut from the rump. This type of cut is typically on the lean side and muscular. When shopping for your sirloin tips, look for strips of meat that have a decent amount of fat marbling. You want the fat in there so your steak will be more tender and flavorful!
Cut the strips into cubes
Steak tip meat is usually sold in strips. As a result, you need to cut your strips into cubes. Slice across the strips making cubes that are about 2 inches long. You don’t want to cut the tips too small because they will be harder to rotate/flip on the grill – plus, they will cook too fast and easily overcook.
Add seasoning
Place all the steak tips into a bowl and season them with McCormick Grill Mates Montreal Steak Seasoning. McCormick Grill Mates Montreal Steak Seasoning has the perfect ratio of sea salt and spices that have the uncanny ability to transform even the most mundane steak into a flavor packed cut of beef.
We’ve used many different seasonings, but always find ourselves gravitating back to our tried and true McCormick Grill Mates line seasonings.
After you have seasoned your meat, allow steak to sit covered in a bowl at room temperature while you preheat your grill.
Preheat the gas grill
To cook the perfect steak tip, your grill needs to be hot… I mean really hot! You want to sear the outside of the meat so it holds the flavorful juice inside until you bite into it. Therefore, your grill needs to be preheated on high for 10-15 minutes.
The objective is to preheat your grill until it reaches 500°F.
Grill the steak tips
Once your grill is preheated to around 500°F, place your steak tips on the grate with at least an inch of space between each of them.
If you have various sized tips, which you probably do… place the smaller ones on the cooler section of your grill and the larger ones on the hotter section. (Most grills aren’t perfect at having consistent heat at all areas of the cooking grates, so it pays to know what areas are hotter than others so you can place your meat accordingly based on size or doneness.)
Cook the tips on high heat for 2-3 minutes per side to sear them.
Once your sirloin tips are seared on both sides, turn the heat down to medium-high and cook another 3-4 minutes per side until medium rare.
Medium rare is the perfect doneness for steak in my opinion, but if you insist on cooking your tips more, add another 1 minute per side for medium and another minute per side for medium-well. If you like your steak well done, just keep them on the grill until they look like beef jerky!
Let them rest
Your steak tips just underwent some intensive cooking action. They now need to rest, undisturbed on a plate on the counter for 5 – 10 minutes.
Place some aluminum foil over the plate of cooked steak tips, cut a slit in the top for ventilation and let them rest. This will allow all the juices that were previously expanding like crazy!

Hello, normally the lid is always closed when you grill food so that the grill can maintain its temperature. For these, that is the same case. Only open to turn them and remove. Thank you, and enjoy!
Shannon Callahan says
Do you keep the grill lid open or closed while cooking the steak?
