A cheesy, and creamy crab meat casserole recipe with sweet onion, imitation crab meat, and delicious flavor. This is perfect served with crusty bread or thick crackers.
Every time I go to our local Chinese buffet there is one dish that I cannot help but scoop up. It is called Crab Casserole and it is the yummiest thing ever!
It features imitation crab meat, sweet onions, and a creamy cheesy sauce that is oh, so good! All that yumminess is then topped with cheddar cheese for an even tastier dish.
You can also serve it appetizer style with some thick pita chips. It can be eaten as is, or like a dip since the recipe is really creamy.
Ingredients
Before starting this recipe, you’ll want to verify that you have the following ingredients:
- An 8-ounce package of Crab Delight Chunk or Flake style
- 5 ounces of cream cheese
- 1/4 cup of sour cream
- 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup of shredded swiss cheese
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper to taste
- 1 medium sweet onion sliced into thin rings
Recipe Tips
This recipe is easy to make if you know the right tips and tricks! Here are my tips for ensuring your Crab Meat Casserole comes out perfectly.
Use Quality Imitation Crab Meat
You’ll want to use quality crab meat. I used Louis Kemp® Crab Delights® Chunk Style which I found near the seafood counter at my local supermarket.
Crab Delights are available in flake and chunk style, and any of these varieties are fine for this casserole recipe.
Storage
Crab Casserole can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Just be sure to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or store it in an airtight container.
Reheating
The best way to reheat this recipe is to place it on a microwave safe dish and microwave on high for 1 minute. If it’s still cool in the center, mix it up and microwave it in additional 30 second intervals.

One 8-ounce package. Thank you!
Jody says
Is this asking for 18 oz of imitation crab meat or 1 – 8 oz package of crab meat?
Amy Desrosiers says
I do not believe it would! Sorry for the delay in replying.
Becky Johnson says
Do you know if this freezes well? I made it but its too much for 1 person. It was so good!!
Molly says
We put a Tampico spin on this. Chicken tampico is made with thin breasts breaded and sauteed, topped with a cheese sauce containing onions, bell peppers and green chilies. I had no chicken so subbed the surimi legs (shaped like crab pulled from the leg)
Which we think is the tastiest surimi. In the fish counter at Publix. Serve on basmati rice. Paired with grilled asparagus, crusty buttery french bread and a melon or green salad. Awesome!! Season as you wish with Old Bay or Cavenders Greek seasoning! Just make a sauce of your favorite cheese, add lightly sauteed onions and peppers; combine with sauce and heat through or bake in au gratin dishes.
Amy Desrosiers says
Awesome! I just remade last night and added Old Bay! So good!
Kristen says
I tried this recipe and put my own spin on it and the old bay on the imitation crab was genius. I also added my own creole kick, doubled the meat portion and only put half of the sweet onion in. Both versions in my opinion were hits and better than I’ve ever had at a Chinese buffet. Thank you for this recipe, absolutely delicious!
Amy Desrosiers says
Yum, sounds good! Thank you for sharing!
Sherrie says
Just made this 😋 I only had chunk immigration crab and used 1/2 chopped yellow onion. Also added pepper, parsley, topped with crushed Ritz crackers. It was awesome. I think next time I will add small diced celery.
Amy Desrosiers says
Hi, in the Northeast they do not add peas, but that sounds good! That cheese will work! Enjoy!
Paula Bradley says
Hi Amy, this recipe looks great and I look forward to trying it…but when the weather is a little cooler. It’s been in the 90’s the last several days and I don’t want to use the oven right now. In our local Chinese restaurant, the crab casserole also has peas in it. I’m trying to remember if it’s just peas or if its mixed vegetables?? I’ve always liked it and I’m glad I found this recipe. My husband is not a big lover of swiss cheese so I thought I’d replace the swiss with Monterey Jack.

Great recipe but super rich. Served it over pasta and it was a hit! Plan on making it again. Thanks for sharing.
Amy Desrosiers says
I would serve white rice, salad, french fries- something along those lines.
Vickie Carpenter says
What would be good served with crab casserole

I don’t rate many recipes with 5 stars….but this was very good. I actually served it as a main dish with several sides. I did add about 1/4 teaspoon of Old Bay seasoning. Someone said in their review that it was missing something……Ritz crackers! Almost everything is better with Ritz. ;-)
Allisynne M Dunlap says
I made this following the recipe, except that I diced the onions. It was very good but missing something. I added a bit of hot sauce and some Old Bay seasoning to top it off on crackers, and it was a 5+. Will definitely make this again!
Amy Desrosiers says
Hi, you can if you want!
Rene says
I have no Swiss cheese. Can I use pepper jack? Also can I use minced onion instead?
Amy Desrosiers says
Hello,
Mozzarella will not add much flavor, but you can use it!
Nike says
What if you don’t have swiss cheese but you mozzarella?
SNK Social Fame says

I tried the crab meat casserole on Sunday and it was delicious. We had a favorite restaurant buffet that served this and I could never get enough of it. I am glad I have recipe now. My whole family and a few friends who sampled some loved it. It is a keeper in my family.
Amy Desrosiers says
Thank you, so much Jean!

Looks so good. My family will surely love this dish.

Hi Pat, You would need to make sure your ingredients are pureed finer.
Using your cookie scoop, add one tablespoon of filling to each mushroom.
Since this is more creamy expect some runniness.
I do have this mushroom recipe you can add 1/2 cup of imitation crab meat to:
https://www.savvysavingcouple.net/easy-low-carb-tailgate-foods/
Bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Enjoy warm!
Pat says
How do you use it in stuffed mushrooms
Jared says
Unfortunately, this is a recipe that cannot be frozen.
Shelda Keith says
Can this be made ahead and frozen
Cynara Whaley says
I am gonna make this soon
Amy says
Hello, you sure can!
Connie says
Can you use real crab meat?
Stacey says
Absolutely delicious. Better than at the restaurant because they cheap out and use too much onion. This is a keeper, but I did wonder about maybe adding some dry mustard
Amy says
Hi Whitney! Thank you, for stopping by! The correct time is in fact 30 mins! Thank you, for pointing that out.
Whitney says
OMG, this sounds amazing.
The heading says to cook for 20 minutes,, but the instructions say to cook for 30 minutes/
Which is correct?
Ray wheeler says
Love imitation crab meat like this!
Amy says
Hi Doug! Sweet onion are white and have a thin skin. They are not bold or bitter like yellow onions are. I am sorry it was not amazing for you. Happy Memorial Day- I will be sure to emphasis that people use sweet ONLY.
Doug says
Wow, I’m sorry but the onion totally overpowers this I wonder if “sweet onion ” means something not available where I live. Once I pick out as much onion I can; not too bad.
Julie says
That’s how I took it. I sliced them thin. Just put it in the oven. I doubled the recipe.
Brenda says
So the onions are still in the thin rings when you combine them in the mixture?
Amy says
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. There was a recipe glitch. I have updated. Thank you!
Meredith says
Hello,
I don’t see what temperature to set the oven for this casserole. Also, does all the cheddar go on top? The instructions aren’t showing for me for some reason.
Thanks.
