Is your favorite part of a holiday meal the stuffing? Perhaps you prefer the Zinfandel Cranberry Sauce or Sweet Potato Casserole. If so, this classic stuffing recipe is based on a family recipe and is ready in minutes. You can use stuffing bread, sliced bread, or Italian bread to make this tasty holiday staple.
The best part of this stuffing recipe is you do not need to bake it in the oven. This recipe is 100% made on the stove top in a heavy duty, thick-walled stockpot.
What is Homemade Bread Stuffing
There are just a few ingredients in this bread stuffing and none of them are hard to fin in stores.
- Onions, you can use yellow onions which are a standard variety for cooking. The saute well and provide good flavor.
- Celery, I used about 2 cups worth (3 normal-zed bunches). Cut the ends and any floral pieces off. Wash and dry your celery before food processing.
- Butter for stuffing recipes should always be the salted variety. This provides ample flavor for the lackluster bread.
- Bread like stuffing bread, day-old sliced bread, or Italian bread is is perfect for this recipe.
- Seasonings like poultry seasoning, oregano, black pepper, and onion powder are the perfect blend.
- Liquid like turkey drippings are the ultimate flavorful addition to this stuffing. You can use chicken stock, but turkey drippings add the ultimate flavor to this stuffing recipe. If you cannot use turkey drippings additional butter and chicken stock can compensate.
How to Make Bread Stuffing
This recipe makes 5 lbs of stuffing and is enough to feed a small crowd.
- Mince your bread into small, bite-sized pieces. You want them to have texture and not be fine crumbed.
- Set the large stockpot on your stove over medium-high heat.
- Add the butter, celery, and onion to the pot.
- Saute for about 5 minutes or until fragrant.
- Add in the minced bread.
- Mix the bread with the onion and celery.
- Add in the 2 cup of turkey dripping or chicken stock. If your bread needs more liquid, add 1/2 cup more of drippings or stock.
- Season generously with poultry seasoning, black pepper, onion powder, and oregano.
- This stuffing takes elbow grease to mix and needs to constantly be stirred for 5 minutes.
- Serve warm.
How to Freeze Stuffing
To freeze your bread stuffing, allow your stuffing to cool completely before adding it to a aluminum, freezer-safe pan. I prefer aluminum pans with lids which I wrap in additional foil to keep it fresh.
This stuffing will store in the freezer for up to one month for best taste. To heat, place in the oven at 350 for 20-30 minutes- Stir at the 15 minute mark. You can also add a little more butter to it to moisten.
