Heirloom Tomato Soup Ingredients
- Heirloom & Cherry tomatoes: Heirloom tomatoes offer a rich, less acidic flavor profile. Roasting them intensifies their sweetness and adds a smoky depth. Cherry tomatoes offer a naturally sweet tomato addition to the soup.
- Onion, garlic, and bell pepper: The savory flavors from the onion, garlic, and bell pepper complement the sweetness of the tomatoes and create a well-rounded flavor.
- Olive oil: The olive oil helps to caramelize the vegetables and extract their flavor, contributing to the overall richness of the soup.
- Herbs and spices: The fresh Italian herbs complement the tomato and veggie flavors, while salt and pepper enhance the taste.
- Chicken broth: The chicken broth provides a base for the soup and can be swapped for vegetable broth to make this vegetarian/vegan-friendly.
- Heavy cream (optional): If you add heavy cream, it adds a creamy texture and a touch of richness to the soup.
Why Roasting the Soup Ingredients is Key
The roasting process is crucial in developing the flavor of the soup. When the tomatoes, onion, garlic, and bell pepper are roasted, they caramelize, which intensifies their sweetness and adds a smoky flavor. The high heat also helps to break down the flesh of the tomatoes, releasing their juices and flavor.
Blending the soup creates a smooth and velvety texture, allowing the flavors to meld together seamlessly. The addition of heavy cream (if desired) further enhances the creaminess and richness of the soup.
By combining these ingredients and techniques, you create a flavorful, hearty, and satisfying roasted heirloom tomato soup that is perfect for any occasion.
